LAPUSH — Predicted gale force winds and a high surf advisory may have kept 2003 LaPush Surf Frolic kayakers off the beach Saturday.
But the weather didn’t keep them from enjoying their sport.
Rather than tackle the unpredictable and pounding surf — spawned by swells of up to 21 feet — at First Beach, kayakers took their hobby to Sol Duc River at Sappho, where they launched at Sol Duc Fish Hatchery and rode the river’s waves.
In between their wet and wild river rides, they snacked on sandwiches and had lunch under makeshift canopies.
Saturday marked the second day in a row ominous seas prompted enthusiastic kayakers and surfers to refrain from daring the waves at First Beach.
However, Surf Frolic officials and participants are optimistic the weather will cooperate today, allowing them to return to First Beach to wrap up their three-day event.
