PORT ANGELES — The Fiero Marine Life Center is offering summer science lessons to kids where geology is more than a subject of study — it’s also lunch.
The 10-day Sea Steward program for children 9 years to 11 years of age offers youngsters a hands-on, fun approach to marine science. Textbooks and quiz sheets won’t be part of the curriculum for this education at the City Pier marine lab at the foot of Lincoln Street.
Instead, kids scarf down “tectonic plates” of lunch while they learn about the real undersea geologic plates, fingerprint giant Pacific octopus and mimic the movements of sea animals during lessons of “Tide Pool Tai Chi.”
“We want to have fun and teach kids to respect and take care of ocean critters.” said Kate Keehner, teacher of the Sea Steward program.
