Woman missing in Port Angeles found unharmed

PORT ANGELES — An 80-year-old Arizona woman was found unharmed at about 7 a.m. today in the yard of a Morse Creek-area residence after she was reported missing between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Tuesday from her vehicle about three miles away in the Olympic Medical Center parking lot, police said.

Police believe Jeanne Smithart, described as likely to get confused or disoriented, walked away from her vehicle parked in the Olympic Medical Center parking lot at Race and Caroline Streets and walked down Olympic Discovery Trail while her son, Mark Smithart, was in the emergency room for treatment.

He went back out to their vehicle after about hours to an hour and half and found her gone.

The mother and son are from Arizona and were camping at Heart O’ the Hills campground at Olympic National Park when they went to the hospital, Port Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said.
