Wreck blocks U.S. 101 near Brinnon

BRINNON — A spinout wreck four miles south of Brinnon on Sunday left four injured and closed both lanes of U.S. Highway 101 for nearly two hours.

State Patrol troopers said John R. Milford, 21, of Sequim was driving a 2005 Toyota Scion when he attempted to pass a 1994 Oldsmobile Bravada driven by Marlena Stinebaugh, 61, of Brinnon.

Troopers said Milford lost control while making the pass and struck the rear driver’s side corner of the Oldsmobile. Both vehicles spun off the road and came to a rest in an embankment — with Stinebaugh’s SUV half-submerged in a pond.

The state Department of Transportation closed the road at 4:10 p.m. near Milepost 310 and reopened it at 6:04 p.m.

Milford, who was cited for driving too fast for conditions, and Stinebaugh were transported to Mason General Hospital in Shelton with unknown injuries, as were two passengers in Stinebaugh’s vehicle — Cheryl F. Ennis, 61, of Brinnon and Linda K. Steele, 63, also of Brinnon.

A spokesman at the Shelton hospital said three of the patients were treated and released and one was transferred to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.
