PORT TOWNSEND ­— Writers of all types are invited to the Northwind Arts Center, 2409 Jefferson St., for an Ekphrastic Write-In this Tuesday.

During this 7 p.m. gathering, poets and prose writers will have quiet time to view and respond, with their words, to the works in the “Expressions Northwest” art show.

The 76-piece display is part of the annual Art Port Townsend event (www.ArtPortTownsend.org).

Responses can be to one work of art, several or to the whole display.

The Ekphrastic Write-In host, Bill Mawhinney, will hold the space open until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Ekphrastic writing, Mawhinney said, is writing inspired by other art; it’s based on the idea that the art object, be it a painting, sculpture or photograph, is a draft of the poem or story.

Those who can’t make it Tuesday night still can participate.

“Stop at Northwind during our regular hours,” Mawhinney said.

Admission is free to the art gallery, which is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday.

Later this month, writers will have a chance to share their responses during a public reading at the Northwind Arts Center.

That open-mic session, also open to listeners, is set for 7 p.m. Thursday,

Aug. 22.
