Youth in custody over Port Townsend shooting

PORT TOWNSEND — One man is in the hospital and a teenager is in custody as police gather information on an early morning shooting that took place Monday.

Port Townsend Police Sgt. Ed Green said his department is continuing to investigate what is believed to be an intentional shooting at 304 Hendricks St.

According to Green:

Officers were called out to the home at 3:30 a.m. Monday morning in response to a report of loud party. No one was home.

Police were then called to Jefferson Healthcare hospital where Justin White, 20, revealed he had been at the Hendricks Street home when he was shot in the right leg.

Police returned to the residence. Two individuals were taken into custody, and a search warrant was approved just before noon.

After further investigation, police determined the shooter was a 17-year-old boy and arrested him on investigation of assault in the first degree.

He is being held at the Kitsap Youth Center pending trial.

The Peninsula Daily News does not name juveniles unless they are tried as adults.

The house is owned by Wayne Clement, Green said.

Paperwork awaited

Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Rosekrans said he had not received paperwork on the investigation as of Monday night.

Rosekrans said the earliest they would go to court would be today at 11:30 a.m. if the 17-year-old is tried as an adult.

If he is tried as a juvenile, he will likely make an appearance at 1:30 p.m.

Green said a second individual, Sam Clement, 18, was released from custody Monday afternoon.

According to a spokeswoman for Jefferson Healthcare, White was in stable condition Monday night.

Green said White has refused to give police information on the incident.

“This is where the community comes in,” Green said.

“Anyone who has any information, anyone who was there, we would really like to hear from them.”

Green can be contacted at 360-379-4667.
