Upthegrove moves into top two for state public lands commissioner

PORT ANGELES — Dave Upthegrove, a Democrat, gained a slight advantage to get into second place and hold a top-two spot for state Commissioner of Public Lands after additional primary election ballots were counted Thursday.

Former Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, a Republican, continued to lead the race with 22.2 percent of the vote, while Upthegrove scored 20.7 percent and nudged past Sue Kuehl Pederson, a Republican who had 20.5 percent.

There were no additional changes after ballots were counted in Clallam and Jefferson counties or statewide on Thursday.

In Clallam County, 10,000 ballots remain to be counted. The next count is scheduled to take place by 5 p.m. Friday. Voter turnout was 28.2 percent, just less than the statewide turnout of 29.5 percent.

In Jefferson County, 3,718 ballots remain to be counted. The next count is scheduled to take place by 4:30 p.m. Monday. Voter turnout in the county was 40.5 percent.

Results are unofficial until the election is certified Aug. 20.
