1B PREP FOOTBALL: Crescent shocks 1A Charles Wright

JOYCE — The Crescent football team got revenge on a 1A Charles Wright team that beat the Loggers 46-0 last year with a hard-fought 20-16 win at home over the Tarriers.

“They had some big dudes,” said coach Brian Shimko. “They kept fighting to the end. They’ve got some good players.”

But the Loggers took advantage of their speed with nearly 400 yards of offense on the ground and through the air to overcome that size.

Quarterback Henry Bourm led the way, rushing for 86 yards on 12 carries. He also passed 11-of-16 for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

Shimko said Crescent could have won the game more easily but the Loggers all but handed the Tarriers a couple of touchdowns with a critical unnecessary roughness penalty and a fumble.

The Loggers opened the scoring with Bourm connecting with Conner Bauers on a 55-yard score. Lukas Love got the 2-point conversion.

Charles Wright came back to tie it at 8-8, but then Crescent was able to take a 14-8 lead into the half on a 3-yard Tommy Leonard touchdown run.

Crescent was able to take a 20-8 lead when Bourm threw for his second score, this one a 19-yarder to Love. The Tarriers got a late score to make it close.

The Loggers had 211 yards rushing. Dominiq Sprague had eight carries for 45 yards, while Love had three carries for 34. Bauers had a 34-yard run.

Love led the team in receiving with five catches for 56 yards, while Carter Clifford had four catches for 47 yards. Owen Jackson had 4-yard catch.

The Loggers go into North Olympic League play 2-0 with impressive wins over Charles Wright and Oakville. The Loggers travel to Neah Bay to play the 0-2 Red Devils at 7 p.m. Friday. That Neah Bay record is deceptive as the Red Devils’ two losses are to last year’s reigning 1B champion Liberty Bell and a good 2B Forks squad.

“Now I feel like the real football season begins,” Shimko said.

Friday’s game

Mossyrock 54, Quilcene 16

MOSSYROCK — The Quilcene football team got off to a fast start, getting a 72-yard touchdown on the Rangers’ first play from scrimmage, but couldn’t keep up with a good Mossyrock team in a 54-16 road loss Friday night.

“They jumped on us early,” said Quilcene coach Trey Beathard. The Vikings started by getting up 8-0 early in the first quarter on their first drive. The Rangers responded with a 72-yard run by Andrew Perez to make it 8-8.

On the Rangers’ next possession, they drove down to the 5-yard line, but the drive stalled without a score. Beathard felt that was a turning point in the game as Mossyrock came back and scored.

“We had a hard time stopping them,” Beathard said. “They did a good job of keeping the ball away from us.”

Beathard said the Rangers were able to string together some drives and first downs, but never long enough to result in many scores.

Quilcene was able to score its second touchdown in the fourth quarter, again Perez with a 5-yard run. That touchdown was set up by a 60-yard scamper by the Rangers’ Dominick Smith.

Beathard pointed out that Mossyrock’s only loss last year was to 1B state champion Liberty Bell in the playoffs. He said they are moving up to 2B next year.

Perez finished with 128 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Smith had 119 yards on four carries. He also scored a 2-point conversion.

Eli Iverson had a 9-yard run and scored a 2-point conversion. Quarterback Oliver Hopkins was 3-for-5 passing with 42 yards. Smith had two catches for 33 yards and Robert Evans had a 9-yard catch.

Beathard said Smith played some quarterback and had some good deep passes, but the Rangers’ receivers had some drops.

Kaden Faller led the Rangers with 12 tackles and Taylor Boling had nine. He said Smith had 11 tackles, a quarterback sack and a caused a fumble.

“If all the kids worked as hard and played as hard as Dominick, we’d have an outstanding team,” Beathard said.

Quilcene (0-2) has lost to two playoff regulars in Naselle and Mossyrock and now must prepare for a hot Concrete team next week that beat Muckleshoot 68-14 and Winlock 48-0. That game, a league contest, is 1 p.m. Saturday in Quilcene.
