2A STATE BASKETBALL: Sequim falls at buzzer in overtime

YAKIMA — Zack Lee banked in a desperation heave at the buzzer to give Renton a 59-56 overtime win over Sequim in the opening round of the 2A state basketball tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome on Thursday.

The Wolves had the ball with five seconds remaining, but the Indians managed to poke it away and Lee scooped it up and got a shot off before time expired.

Sequim had a slow start, falling behind 14-6 after one quarter, but quickly fought its way back into the game in in the second quarter, and the game was close the rest of the way. The Wolves trailed by just three at halftime and the score was even at the end of the third and fourth quarters.

Jayson Brocklesby led Sequim with 16 points, while Alex Barry contributed 13 and Gabe Carter had 12.

Renton’s Lavelle Smith led all scorers with 17 points. Lee’s game-winner gave him nine points in the game.

The Indians dominated the boards, grabbing 50 rebounds to Sequim’s 27. Renton’s total included 29 offensive rebounds.

The Wolves will next play Burlington-Edison on Friday at 9 a.m. The Tigers opened the 2A tournament with a 56-36 loss to Pullman.

Neah Bay will play Taholah in the 1B state tournament tonight at 9 p.m. in Spokane.
