TACOMA — Alex Barry and Jolene Millsap were poised for big things at the Class 2A state track and field championships at Mount Tahoma High School and both delivered.
Barry, a junior from Sequim, followed up his West Central District javelin championship by placing third at state with a throw of 178 feet and 3 inches.
Port Angeles’ Millsap set a school record in the 100-meter dash in the preliminaries Friday and then placed fourth in the finals.
Millsap ran the preliminaries in 12.31 seconds, which surpasses the time of 12.35 seconds ran by Chantea Watson in 2004.
Millsap then ran a 12.66 in Saturday’s finals to claim fourth place.
The senior also took ninth in the 200 with a time of 25.40 seconds, falling one spot short of reaching the finals.
Port Angeles junior Zoe Owens-Clawson earned a place on the podium in her first trip to state, taking seventh in the triple jump with a 35-04, which beat her previous personal record of 34-03.75 by more than a foot.
Also for the Roughriders, Brittany Norberg took 10th in the javelin with a 115-08, and Willow Suess took eighth in her heat and 15th overall in the 800 with a time of 2:30.51.
For the Sequim girls, senior Sarah Hutchison placed 10th in the javelin with a mark of 9 feet, while Waverly Shreffler finished 14th in the 400 with a time of 1:01.06.
The Wolves’ 4×400-meter relay team missed the finals by finishing 10th in the preliminaries. Hannah Hudson, Gretchen Happe, Mercedes Woods and Shreffler had a time of 4:12.62.
2A Boys
Sequim’s Oscar Herrera narrowly missed reaching the finals in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.
The sophomore finished 10th in the 110 hurdles (15.90 seconds) and ninth in the 300 hurdles (40.06 seconds).
Another sophomore, Jackson Oliver, jumped a 6-0 in the high jump to place ninth for the Wolves.
C.J. Daniels, also a sophomore at Sequim, placed 10th in the 1,600 (4:25.74) and 12th in the 800 (2:00.56).
Port Angeles’ lone boy state competitor, Peter Butler, finished 10th in the 3,200 with a time of 9:48.31. Mikey Cobb was 16th in that event for the Wolves, running a 10:28.66.
In the pole vault, Sequim’s Josh Cibene took 13th with a 12-06, Austin Sampson was 15th in the discus (122-11) and Dylan Chatters placed 16th in the 400 (53.83 seconds).
