ADVENTURE SPORTS: Little Hurt joining this year’s Big Hurt; registration remains open

PORT ANGELES — A Little Hurt is being added this year to Peninsula Adventure Sports’ Big Hurt this September.

The Little Hurt, set for Sept. 26, is a multi-sport event for youths from the fourth through the ninth grades. The three legs are bicycling at the Lincoln Park BMX Track, rowing on rowing machines provided by the Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association and trail running in Lincoln Park. Each participant will do all three legs.

There will be opportunities for kids to practice and train. Kids can follow the Big Hurt on social media at www.facebook.com/bighurtpa to learn about pre-events sponsored by Lincoln Park BMX, OPRA and the Port Angeles School District Americorps.

The categories are fourth through sixth grades, seventh through eighth grades, and ninth grade. The event is limited to 160 total participants. The cost is $15, and all kids will receive a T-shirt and finisher medal.

The BMX ride is 10 laps at the Lincoln Park BMX Track, the run is 1.1 miles for the youngest kids, 1.9 miles for seventh- and eighth-graders and 2.7 miles for ninth-graders. The rowing is 1,000 meters for the youngest kids, 2,000 meters for seventh- and eighth-graders and 3,000 meters for ninth-graders.

Helmets are required for bike riders, no riders younger than 13 can use clipless pedals, long pants and knee pads are recommended, BMX or mountain bikes can be used. Kickstands and reflectors must be removed before the race. There will be a limited supply of BMX track bikes available to use at no charge.

All riders must have a USABMX membership. If kids have one, they need to provide it in registration. If kids do not have one, they can get a one-day membership form for no charge at www.tinyurl.com/1daymembership.

There will also be an open house at the Lincoln Park BMX Track from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 25.
