PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles and Sequim girls soccer teams, who both had successful seasons with trips to state, placed a total of five players on the All-Olympic League first team and another five on the second team.
Making the first team was Sequim’s Taryn Johnson, her third straight first-team selection. Johnson holds the Sequim record for most career goals with 79. She had 27 goals and 11 assists this year to help lead the Wolves to a 13-5 record, a third-place finish at district and a trip to state. Johnson is moving on to play soccer at Minnesota State-Mankato next year.
Also making first team was Sequim’s Jennyfer Gomez, who also had an impressive season with 15 goals and seven assists. Teammate Kaia Lestage, a defender who anchored the Wolves’ stout back line, was also named to the first team.
For the Roughriders, senior midfielder Paige Mason and senior forward Izzy Felton both made the first team. Mason and Felton were the leaders on a young team that won three straight games at district to qualify for state. Mason led the Riders with 12 goals and three assists, and Felton had eight goals and five assists, including a hat trick against North Mason. The Riders finished with an 11-7 record.
The league MVP was Evelyn Beers of league-champion North Kitsap. Beers’ numbers were nearly as good as Johnson’s — 23 goals and 11 assists.
Making the second team were Port Angeles midfielder Teanna Clark and goalkeeper Kennedy Rognlien, who played the keeper position for the first time in her high school career. The Riders had nine shutouts this season and two other games giving up just one goal with Rognlien in goal. Rognlien also had two shutouts in the district playoffs, including one that involved two penalty kick saves. Clark had nine goals and nine assists.
Also making the second team were Sequim forward Raimey Brewer, a set piece leader who led the Wolves with nine assists, and defender Libby Turella. Also making the second team was Sequim’s Olive Bridge, the only freshman to make either the league’s first or second teams.
Winning the sportsmanship award for each team were Sequim’s Mikiah Winter and Port Angeles’ Becca Manson.
