AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Wilder Sr. bounces back for victory

SELAH — The Wilder Sr. Baseball Club bounced back from a couple of tough losses the day before with a 6-3 win over Whatcom Post No. 7 on Sunday morning at Carlon Park in Selah.

Wilder Sr. (5-2) played a final game in Selah on Sunday afternoon after press deadline as the Olympic Peninsula 19U team looks to salvage a 2-2 record at the Yakima Valley tournament.

In Sunday’s win, Colton Romero pitched outstanding, going six shutout innings and allowing just five hits while striking out nine. Josiah Gooding pitched the seventh, allowing two hits and two earned runs.

At the plate, Alex Angevine and Elijah Flodstrom both had huge games. Angevine went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Flodstrom went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.

Jordan Shumway also hit a pair of doubles, scored a run and drove in one. Brayden White hit a double and drove in a run. Brayden Hagerty had a single and an RBI.

Wilder Sr. has a pair of doubleheaders scheduled at Civic Field Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, they will play Lakeside Legion 18U at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and on Sunday they will play Lakeside Recovery Elite 18U at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Saturday’s games

Wilder Sr. lost a strange game Saturday to the Columbia Basin RiverDogs as Blake Sohlberg and Kaleb Mullen combined for a one-hitter but lost 8-4.

The RiverDogs may have managed just one hit, but Wilder Sr. was hurt by a combined 10 walks and three hit batsmen. The Riverdogs also stole eight bases, including three by Peyton Juarez who walked, stole second, stole third and finally stole home for a run without the benefit of a hit. Wilder Sr. also had two errors and Columbia Basin had a sac bunt for a run and two sacrifice flies as they played effective small ball to score all eight of their runs in the final three innings.

Sohlberg went four innings, striking out four, allowing one hit and three earned runs. Mullen pitched two innings, allowing no hits but four earned runs.

Wilder Sr. had 10 hits. White was 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI, while Angevine was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Brayden Hagerty was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Romero was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

In their second game, Wilder Sr. only managed one hit against Yakima Valley’s Ty Estey and Logan Stevenson. Flodstrom had Wilder Sr.’s lone hit, while Angevine had a walk and a stolen base.

On the mound, Hagerty went four innings, allowing eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out three.
