AMERICAN LEGION: Wilder Junior clutch in ninth inning in late game Sunday

BURLINGTON — Wilder Junior won its final game of its six-game road trip, getting clutch pitching from Hunter Stratford in the ninth inning and a clutch RBI from Owen Leitz in the top of the ninth inning to beat the BurlSox24 late Sunday, 3-2.

Wilder Junior won three out of six games. The AA team was swept by Mount Vernon on Friday, swept Lynden on Saturday and split two games with the BurlSox24 on Sunday.

Wilder Junior went into the ninth inning up 2-1 when it got an important insurance run in the top of the inning. Carson Waddell hit a single and Brandt Perry came in to pinch run, stealing second. Leitz followed up with a single to score Perry from second base to make it 3-1.

That turned out to be critical as the BurlSox24 rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run on two hits and a walk. But Wilder Junior pitcher Hunter Stratford, who went the distance, got the final out of the game on a strikeout with the tying and game-winning runs on base.

Stratford allowed just four hits and one earned run in his victory. He struck out six and walked three.

Wilder Junior had only five hits. Carston Seibel was 1-for-2 with a run scored, Ian Smithson 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk, and Kody Williams hit a triple and drove in two runs.

Wilder Junior, now 7-3 on the season, plays at home at Volunteer Field for a doubleheader Saturday against Whatcom Post No. 7 AA beginning at 1 p.m.

Wilder Senior plays Whatcom Post No. 7 AAA at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday at Civic Field on Saturday.

Wilder A begins play on June 19 at home at 6 p.m. against the Kingston Kings.
