PA’s Paynter, Lower Columbia win NWAC title
LONGVIEW — Travis Paynter, a 2016 Port Angeles High School graduate, won the Northwest Athletic Conference baseball championship with his Lower Columbia College teammates on Monday.
After Everett forced a second, winner-take-all final with a 6-3 victory, Lower Columbia won the school’s 12th baseball title with a 5-1 win over the Trojans.
Paynter, the Peninsula Daily News’ 2016 All-Peninsula MVP, pitched three innings in a semifinal victory over Lane on Sunday, allowing one run on two hits.
He logged 21 innings pitched in eight appearances for the champs (40-10) in his freshman season, starting four games and totaling a 3.00 earned run average.
Another former Port Angeles standout, Eric Lane, is an assistant coach for the Red Devils.
Crosscutter tryouts
SEQUIM — Tryouts for the Olympic Crosscutters AAA American Legion baseball program will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at the Sequim High School baseball field.
Players ages 16 to 19 from across the North Olympic Peninsula are invited to tryout.
It’s for Olympic Crosscutters baseball participating in AAA legion program. Tryouts will be Wednesday and Thursday at Sequim high school from 6-8pm.

New BMX rider clinic
PORT ANGELES —Lincoln Park BMX will hold a free new rider clinic at the track, corner of S. L St. and W. Lauridsen Blvd., from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.
The clinic is open to new riders or anyone who wants to try the sport for the first time.
Extra bikes and helmets will be available for kids who don’t have that equipment.
USABMX certified coaches will be on hand to assist and train riders.

Physicals, car wash
SEQUIM — Prep athletes can get a jump on the fall rush and take care of their sports physical examination requirement at a combination clinic/car wash benefit for the Sequim High School boys varsity soccer team.
The event will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10.
Sports physicals will be conducted by Dr. Carl Weber and Dr. Kip Tulin and the fee is $20 per physical.
The car wash is by donation.
