PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team got off to a fast start against Skagit Valley, then had to hang on down the stretch to win 58-52 on Monday.

The game was a makeup of a game postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.

Sequim graduate Hope Glasser had another good game for the Pirates, leading the team with 20 points and nine rebounds. Tasiah Little filled up the box score with nine points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Little also hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Keeli-Jade Smith came off the bench to score eight.

“We came out strong and had a lot of energy,” said coach Alison Crumb.

The Pirates got off to a 23-12 lead after the first quarter. The Pirates built that lead up to 31-16 midway through the second quarter before Skagit Valley started clawing back.

Skagit Valley made the score 55-51 with three minutes left, but the Pirates’ defense didn’t allow the Cardinals to score another basket. Glasser made a layup at 2:36 left for the games’ final field goal.

Crumb thought it was good for the women to win a close game.

“We haven’t been in too many close games. It’s nice to go through those and hold on,” she said.

The win gives the Pirates a winning record at 5-4 and in third place in the North Division. Peninsula next plays at first-place Whatcom (6-1) on Wednesday. It will be Peninsula’s first crack at the Orcas as two earlier meetings were postponed.

“It will be a track meet. We’re looking forward to it,” Crumb said.

Boys Tennis

East Jefferson 5, Olympic 2

BREMERTON — The East Jefferson boys’ tennis team got a pair of wins from its doubles teams and a singles win from Carter Cameron to beat Olympic 5-2 on Monday.

Cameron won his match 6-0, 6-0. In doubles matches, Roman Humphrey and Reid Martin won their match 6-2, 6-0, and Sebastian Manza and Ashton Meyer-Bibbins won their match 6-3, 6-1.

East Jefferson won two other doubles’ matches by forfeit.

Ben Martin and Micajah Shifflet lost their singles matches.
