AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Pickleball training course and other events occurring on the North Olympic Peninsula

Pickleball training course

SEQUIM — Those interested in learning pickleball can attend a free, four-week novice training class offered by The Sequim Picklers.

The class will run from Tuesday, April 25 until Thursday, May 18, and has space for eight beginning players.

Class sessions will be held on courts two and three at the pickleball courts at the corner of West Fir Street and North Third Avenue, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Picklers will rotate their four trainers through the four weeks with two trainers present at each class.

The first eight people to sign up will be in the class, and the extras will be placed on a waiting list for the next available class.

Pirates recognized

PORT ANGELES — Four Peninsula College student-athletes have earned 2016-17 Winter Sports Academic Excellence awards from the Northwest Athletic Conference.

Pirate women’s basketball players Taisha Thomas, Alicia Dugan and Cami Butler, along with men’s basketball player Alex Baham were honored.

Qualifications for recognition are to be a sophomore in eligibility, have a minimum of 36 credits earned, a 3.25 cumulative GPA and be recommended by the attending college.

Hyppa hoops sessions

PORT ANGELES — Basketball coach Chris Hyppa will offer two Sunday Skill Sessions at Peninsula College on Sunday.

The first session is open to boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade and will run from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The second session for sixth- through 12th-graders will follow from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The sessions will work on skill development, footwork, basketball IQ enhancement and moving without the ball in a competitive atmosphere.

PA’s Wahl honored

IRVING, Texas – The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced Wednesday that Eric Wahl, a 2013 Port Angeles High School graduate, is one of just 58 NAIA members of the 2017 NFF Hampshire Honor Society.

The honor society is made up of college football players from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 grade point average or better throughout their college careers. Wahl, a senior, played defensive end and defensive tackle for Dakota State University, an NAIA school in Madison, S.D., and will be graduating this spring.

A total of 1,089 athletes from 297 schools qualified for membership in the society’s 11th year.

Wahl also has been named to the 2016 Daktronics-NAIA Football Scholar-Athlete and North Star Athletic Association Fall Sports Scholar-Athlete.

Qualifications for membership in the NFF Hampshire Honor Society include:

• Being a starter or a significant contributor in one’s last year of eligibility (or a senior who has declared for the NFL draft) at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III or an NAIA college or university;

• Achieving a 3.2 cumulative grade point average throughout entire course of undergraduate study; and

• Meeting all NCAA/NAIA-mandated progress towards degree requirements.

The initiative has honored 7,723 student-athletes since its inception, and the program has experienced growth every year in either members or school participation since its launch in 2007.
