AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Fishing classes, wrestling tourney, adventure races, weekend basketball

SEQUIM — Brian Menkal of Brian’s Sporting Goods in Sequim will offer a class on river fishing for salmon and steelhead this Tuesday and Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The class will provide attendees with recommendations on the best places to fish, the best lures to use and much more.

“This will be a very complete class for beginners,” Menkal said.

The cost is $50 plus tax for the classes that will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Call to make a reservation at 360-683-1950.

Battle for the Axe

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles will be hosting the huge 14-team Battle for the Axe wrestling tournament at Port Angeles High School all day Saturday.

Hundreds of grapplers from all around the Peninsula and Western Washington will attend the all-day meet.

Boys and girls teams from Port Angeles, Forks, Sequim, Port Townsend, Fife, Stadium, Wilson Kingston, Klahowya, North Mason, Olympic, River Ridge and Oak Harbor will compete.

In addition, an all-star team built of extras from other teams also will be fielded.

The dual format tournament will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Proceeds from the event help pay for the wrestling referees, while proceeds from concessions will go toward the Port Angeles wrestling booster club and Associated Student Body.

The cost is $6 for adults, $6 for students with an ASB card, $4 for visiting students, middle school students and elementary school students, and $2 for adults older than 65.

Adventure races growing

PORT ANGELES — Peninsula Adventure Sports is holding a total of six race events — including two new events — in 2020.

Registration is being taken for the Frosty Moss Relay on Feb. 29, the Salt Creek 24 on March 21, the OAT Run on April 18, the Gravel Unravel outside of Quilcene on June 27, the GOAT Run on Sept. 12 and the Big Hurt on Sept. 26.

• Frosty Moss Relay: An 80-mile off-road relay run on the Olympic Discovery and Olympic Adventure trails from the Sol Duc Valley to Blyn. Register at frostymossrelay.com.

• Salt Creek 24: A 24-hour race around the Salt Creek Recreation Area. People can register at tinyurl.com/SaltCreek24.

• OAT Run: A 12K or half-marathon trail run on the Olympic Adventure Trail. Register at Oatrun.org.

• Gravel Unravel: An endurance bicycle event on gravel roads in the Olympic National Forest outside of Quilcene. Registration will open later this month. For more information, go to tinyurl.com/GravelUnravel.

• GOAT Run: A longer version of the OAT Run, with half-marathon, marathon and 50K distances on the Great Olympic Adventure Trail. Registration is not open yet, but people can register soon at greatoatrun.org.

• Big Hurt: A mountain bike, kayaking, road bicycle and run in and around Port Angeles. People can register at bighurtpa.com/registration.

Basketball returns

PORT ANGELES — After a long break over the holidays, basketball is returning to Port Angeles this weekend.

Tonight the Port Angeles boys, undefeated in the Olympic 2A Division League, play a nonleague game against La Center at 7 p.m.

The Sequim boys also return home with a game at 4 p.m. today against Central Kitsap, while Chimacum hosts Coupeville at 3:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Peninsula College women, at 6-4 in preconference, play their first home game of the year at 2 p.m. in a nonleague game against Centralia (7-6).

The Peninsula men, who are 9-2, play Highline (8-5) at roughly 4 p.m. Saturday in another nonleague game.

The semipro Port Angeles Rams play at the Peninsula College gym against the Tacoma Kings at 4 p.m. Sunday.
