Sequim goalie Henninger to play for Vikings
BELLINGHAM — Sequim’s Claire Henninger has signed to play for the NCAA Division II powerhouse Western Washington Vikings women’s soccer team.
Henninger, a standout at goalkeeper for the Wolves, joins a program that finished 18-2 in 2017 and played in the NCAA II West Regional Championship game for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
“Claire is a fantastic athlete with a huge upside,” Vikings head coach Travis Connell said. “She has the right mentality to be a tremendous college goalkeeper.”
Over the last six seasons Western Washington has compiled a 118-11-7 (.893) record, winning the 2016 NCAA II championship and advancing to the NCAA II Championships each season during this stretch dating back to 2012.
Henninger captained Sequim during her junior and senior seasons and recorded 28 shutouts during her four-year varsity career, including eight clean sheets in a 12-game stretch to close out her senior season last fall.
The 2016 Peninsula Daily News All-Peninsula Girls Soccer MVP also earned First Team All-Olympic League honors three times, and honorable mention All-State twice by the Washington State Soccer Coaches Association.
Henninger also received the WIAA Outstanding Scholastic Award three times.
Beuke, UW win big
HENDERSON, Nev. — Sequim junior Elise Beuke crewed for the No. 1 ranked Washington varsity eight as the Huskies women’s rowing teams won all three races against No. 3 Texas and No. 10 Michigan last Saturday on Lake Las Vegas.
Beuke sits in the third seat on the varsity eight for the Huskies, the defending national champions.
With senior Phoebe Marks-Nicholes at the controls and Brooke Pierson stroking, the Washington eight raced to the win in a time of 6 minutes, 2.60 seconds, winning by open water over second-place Texas (6:08.01) and third-place Michigan (6:10.11).
The Longhorns and the Wolverines are the two highest-ranked teams that the UW has faced so far this year, after having won against No. 13 USC and No. 15 Washington State.
Washington will row at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif. for the annual Cal Dual.
Hurn hitting stride
EDMONDS — Sequim graduate Evan Hurn was selected as Edmonds Community College’s Triton of the Week this week for his exploits on the baseball diamond.
Hurn is hitting .417 on the season, good for second in the Northwest Athletic Conference.
In the past five games, Hurn has gone 8 for 19 (.421) with four runs scored, six RBI, and had the clutch RBI that drove in the winning run in the Tritons 12-inning triumph at Olympic last Monday.
He also hit a three-run home run in Tuesday’s 7-2 win over Bellevue.
Hurn is hitting cleanup and playing first base for No. 1 ranked Edmonds (25-3).
A 2016 Sequim graduate, Hurn also played for the Bellingham Bells in the West Coast League last summer.
