EUGENE, Ore. — The Port Angeles team from White Crane Martial Arts attended the two-day Northwest Regional Hanmadang Championships in Eugene, Ore., over this past weekend, winning a total of nine medals.
“Hanmadang” means “Martial festival” in Korean.
The sword team competing for team traditional weapons included Connie Irving, her son Zach Irving and Grandmaster Robert Nicholls, the head of the White Crane schools in Port Angeles, winning silver in the event. They performed the sword form for third-degree black belts from the World Koryo Gumdo system, Hwa Rang.
In the individual forms competitions, Nicholls won gold in both black belt forms and black belt traditional weapons forms. This makes him the only person in the United States to have won medals in major events in six different decades, a feat he came out of retirement to accomplish, having last competed in 2014 at the National Championships held in Chicago, where he won two gold medals.
At the age of 67 and a ninth-degree black belt, he was both the oldest and highest ranking black belt competing over the weekend. Annabelle Norcross, from White Crane affiliate school Cross Martial Arts in Poulsbo, won four medals in a variety of events. including forms and board breaking.
Discovery Bay women
DISCOVERY BAY — Golf season is heating up for the Discovery Bay women’s club. The women are turning out in greater numbers with a dozen players competing in the game of the week — Ts and Fs is a competition in which only the golf holes that begin with the letters T or F are to be counted — two, three, four and five are on the front nine and 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15 on the back nine.
With twelve players competing, four places were awarded prize money. First place went to Wanda Synnestvedt with a net score of 36. Cindy Breed took second with a score of 37. Third went to Dee Sweeney with 38 and fourth to Jodi Stone with 39. Competition was tight with only a single point separating each of the winning scores.
May 11 will be the annual Beat The Pro competition. Each club member will attempt to beat course pro Jeff Kent.

PORT ANGELES — High Energy Metals emerged as the only unbeaten team remaining in the Peninsula Soccer League after a thrilling 2-1 win over Pura Vida Sunday.
High Energy Metals rode the two goals from Craig Rice to hold off Pura Vida and improve to 7-0 on the season. Piper Williams had the lone goal for Pura Vida.
Windermere improved to 6-1 with a 4-2 win over Salazar Painting, which slipped to 5-2. Kaleb Baier found the net twice, while Evan Swenson and Tom Fordham also scored for Windermere. Edgar Aceves had a pair of goals for Salazar Painting.
Strait Slice and Forks FC played to a 2-2 draw, as Jay Marazon and Jimmy Guigley scored for the pizza club, and Julio Moroto and an own goal accounted for Forks’ scores.
Pantry & Latch rolled past Ediz Hook 9-0, getting two goals each from Dylan Alcafaras, Chris Fields, Spencer Stuhldreher and Ben Stanley and one from Mat Heiaen.
In Sunday’s other match, Bandidos FC edged Los Primos 1-0 with Holden Fleming securing the game-winner.
