AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: White Crane members win medals in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. — The Port Angeles team from White Crane Martial Arts attended the two-day Northwest Regional Hanmadang Championships in Eugene, Ore., over this past weekend, winning a total of nine medals.

“Hanmadang” means “Martial festival” in Korean.

The sword team competing for team traditional weapons included Connie Irving, her son Zach Irving and Grandmaster Robert Nicholls, the head of the White Crane schools in Port Angeles, winning silver in the event. They performed the sword form for third-degree black belts from the World Koryo Gumdo system, Hwa Rang.

At the age of 67 and a ninth-degree black belt, he was both the oldest and highest ranking black belt competing over the weekend. Annabelle Norcross, from White Crane affiliate school Cross Martial Arts in Poulsbo, won four medals in a variety of events. including forms and board breaking.
