AREA SPORTS BRIEFS: Wilder Baseball Club sets tryouts for ages 14-19

PA youth basketball camp set July 17-20

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Baseball Club has planned tryouts for its summer American Legion traveling teams for players ages 14-19 who have played for a high school team in Clallam, Jefferson or Kitsap counties.

Wilder Baseball Club has three teams: Wilder Senior for ages 16-19, coached by Zac Moore; Wilder Junior for ages 15-17, coached by Greg Dickman and Wilder A for ages 14-15 and coached by Jadon Seibel.

Tryouts will be held at Civic Field.

Ages 16-19 will try out from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. May 27-May 30.

Those ages 14-15 will try out from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 27-29.

Those playing Olympic Junior Babe Ruth will try out with the 14-15 group.

Summer hoops camp

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Basketball will host summer youth basketball camps for boys and girls in grades 3-5 and 6-8 from July 17-20 at Port Angeles High School.

Incoming students in grades 3-5 will attend from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Students entering sixth through eighth grades will attend from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The cost is $75 per camper with checks made payable to Port Angeles Boys Basketball.

Local earns shutout

PORT ANGELES — Bryce DeLeon struck out 11 and walked none in a four-hit shutout as Local 155 bested First Federal 7-0 in Olympic Junior Babe Ruth action Wednesday at Volunteer Park.

Brandt Perry led the way with three hits and three runs scored, while Ian Smithson had a single, two stolen bases and scored two runs, and DeLeon walked, swiped a base and scored twice.

Chris Jaynes added two hits and a pair of RBIs, and Lance Moore also had a hit for Local 155.

Mason Grice got the start on the mound for First Federal, striking out seven.

Kade Acker, Grice, Rodolfo Armenia and Levi Bourm all picked up hits for First Federal.

YMCA flag football

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula YMCA is offering co-ed NFL Flag Football Academy for ages 5-7 and two co-ed NFL Flag Football Leagues for 8-12.

Academy practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through July 13. The academy focuses on learning the fundamentals of NFL Flag Football.

The academy is $75 for the public, $65 for YMCA members.

League dates will run from Monday through Aug. 12.

Port Angeles League practices will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Joyce League practices will be three times per week with times to be determined and location tentatively at Crescent School.

Games will be on Saturdays starting June 3 at 10 a.m. and a playoff will be held.

The cost is $75 for the public and $65 for YMCA members.

Rhody Open golf

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Golf Club will host the 2023 annual Rhody Open golf tournaments, also known as the Jim Caldwell Memorial Golf Classic, beginning Saturday.

Proceeds support the Rhododendron Festival Scholarship Fund.

All events will start at 9 a.m.

A two-person nine-hole scramble will be held Saturday, leaving enough time to attend the Rhododendron Festival Grand Parade.

A two-person best ball 18-hole tournament will be held Sunday.

Players can sign up at the clubhouse or call 360-385-4547.
