Pump Track in PT

PORT TOWNSEND — An open house to discuss a potential cycling pump track will be held in the Art building at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes St., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

The idea of a pump track is riders shouldn’t have to pedal, instead use your body to go up and down mounds and pick up speed.

Representatives from track designer Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance will be present to take feedback and ideas for a fairgrounds-based track.

There are two pump tracks in Port Angeles.

Port Angeles cut the ribbon on a new pump track at Erickson Playfield in July 2022. The city used a $350,000 state Recreation Conservation Office grant to build the largest pump track in the Pacific Northwest. The track was designed for people of various skill levels and also includes an ADA-accessible loop for wheelchairs.

The Coville Trails Pump Track west of Port Angeles was opened in August of 2019.

Kids ages 4 through 15 will get hands-on time riding the dirt track with manageable turns and obstacles.

The event is an opportunity to try out the sport ahead of a beginners only spring league season set to start June 3 and continue for five Monday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. through July 1.

League tuition is $149 per kid and includes five weeks of instruction and racing, a league jersey, personalized number plate, loaner bike and helmet (when available) plus a season-end award and pizza party.
