PC men and women earn road shutouts
MOUNT VERNON — Peninsula College earned a road soccer sweep of North Region rival Skagit Valley, with the No. 1-ranked Pirate men edging the second-ranked Cardinals 1-0 and the women triumphing 3-0.
Peninsula (8-1-1, 11-1-1) broke through in the 54th minute when Shu Kato scored off of an assist by Yusaku Shimakura. The goal stood up through the remainder of the match despite Skagit Valley’s best efforts.
Pirates goalkeeper Alejandro Lopez saved four shot attempts to earn the shutout in goal.
Peninsula outshot Skagit Valley (6-2-2, 7-3-2) 12-11, earned six corner kicks to the Cardinals’ five and made more saves than Skagit (6-5).
The top-ranked Pirate women (5-0-0, 7-0-1) earned a 3-0 shutout of Skagit Valley.
Peninsula’s Mya Raunig put the Pirates on the board in the 37th minute; Kenzie Banner added a goal in the 55th minute, and Chiaki Takase’s assist set up Sydney Soskis’ insurance goal in the 85th minute.
Peninsula goalkeeper Frida Markstrom saved three shots to earn the clean sheet.
The Pirate men and women will host Everett on Saturday as part of Peninsula College’s Fan Appreciation Day featuring free snacks and prizes. Kickoff has been moved back to 3:30 p.m. (women) and 5:30 p.m. (men).
Mud drags, tuff trucks
PORT TOWNSEND — A weekend of 4×4 racing is planned at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16.
The Oktoberfest Mud Drags event, put on by Jefferson County’s Tonka Toyz 4×4 Club, will feature a Saturday slate of drag racing through muddy pits, while Sunday is for laps on the Tuff Truck course.
Start time is 11 a.m. with daily general admission prices of $5, pit passes $20 and events $20 for each class entered. Admission is free for youth ages 15 and younger.
On-site camping is $20.
A food vendor and coffee will be available.

Glasser scores TD
Payton Glasser, a 2018 Sequim graduate, scored his first collegiate touchdown in Central Washington University’s 40-7 win over Simon Fraser on Sept. 17.
Glasser, a 6-foot-5 redshirt sophomore, caught a 26-yard score from CWU quarterback Quincy Glasper with 1:26 remaining in the first half.
Glasser finished with three receptions for 71 yards and has six catches for 132 yards, good for fourth on the Wildcats.
