Women win opener

PASCO — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team hopes to end its season the same way it started it Friday, with a win at Columbia Basin College, host of the NWAC tournament in March.

Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist had 19 points to pace the Pirates as they broke a tie early in the fourth quarter and held off a challenge from the Hawks down the stretch in a 78-67 win in the CB Tipoff Classic.

Peninsula went ahead for good early in the fourth quarter when Alexa Mackey was fouled inside while converting on a short shot in the post.

Mackey drained the added free throw and Peninsula led 57-54 with 9:09 remaining.

Julmist hit 9 of 18 shots from the floor and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Neah Bay’s Ryana Moss made her Peninsula debut, cashing in 3-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line to score nine for the Pirates with four rebounds.

Moss is the fourth Moss sister to play under Pirates head coach Alison Crumb, joining sisters Cherish, Cierra and Ruth.
