ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Amayah Nelson, Port Angeles swimming

Port Angeles’ Amayah Nelson has been a big part of the reason why the Roughriders girls swim team has started its season with four straight victories.

Against Olympic on Friday, Nelson was part of four first-place finishes. She won individually in both the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. She was also part of two first-place relay teams — the 200 medley and the 200 freestyle.

This came after a big Olympic League meet Wednesday against Bremerton which the Riders narrowly won. Nelson took first in the 500 freestyle and was part of a winning 200 freestyle relay team. She also finished second in the 100 butterfly. That’s a total of six first-place finishes in a span of 48 hours.

Nelson has already qualified for the district swim meet in the 100 freestyle, the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly.

Last year, she was part of a Port Angeles 200 medley relay team that placed fifth in the state.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
