ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Caleb Cummins, Neah Bay football

The Neah Bay football team went into its game Saturday against Crescent missing three starters on both sides of the ball.

Tyler Swan, Makyah Chambers and Mathias Greene are huge parts of the Red Devils’ offense and defense.

No problem. Into the vacuum stepped freshman Caleb Cummins. He ran the ball 14 times for 184 yards for a 13.2 yards per carry average. He scored three touchdowns and a two-point conversion to help lead Neah Bay to a 68-16 victory, improving to 6-1 on the season. His longest run of the day was for 52 yards.

And that wasn’t all. On defense, he led the Red Devils with 11 tackles, 10 of them solo. He also had three tackles for losses.

The Red Devils hope to have some of their starters return in the next week as Neah Bay hosts rival Lummi on Friday. But, if not, the team is in good hands with its new freshman star.
