ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Colton Romero, Port Angeles baseball

Port Angeles’ Colton Romero, just a sophomore, is still listed on the Roughriders’ junior varsity baseball roster.

After his performance on the mound last week, Romero might be spending the rest of the year on varsity.

Romero started against Mount Tahoma, a 3A school. He gave up a sharp single to the first batter he faced.

Then he promptly mowed down the next nine hitters he faced, striking out seven. He finished his effort by striking out the side in the third inning. Romero’s effort began a one-hitter fired by a trio of Port Angeles pitchers in Friday’s win as the Riders, who began the season 0-4, improved their record to 4-4.

Earlier in the week, Romero also went 2-for-3 at the plate against league foe North Kitsap to help the Roughriders hand the Vikings their first league loss of the year.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
