ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Ezra Townsend, Port Angeles baseball

With Port Angeles boys soccer moving from Civic Field back to the refurbished field at Peninsula College, Roughriders’ baseball player Ezra Townsend immediately took advantage of the fence that had been re-installed for baseball.

In his first at-bat against South Whidbey on April 4, Townsend belted a towering home run over that fence. He also had a great day in the field, making two sweep tags at first on wide throws, successfully getting the tag down on a pickoff play and best of all, pouncing on a slow roller and firing a strike to pitcher Colton Romero, who was covering at first base.

Townsend followed up that performance by going 2-for-2 with a double and two walks in a 16-0 blowout Friday over Mount Tahoma. He had a run scored and four RBIs. Townsend is one of the reasons the Riders have won three straight games as the entire team has been playing well lately.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
