ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Hannah Bates, Sequim girls basketball

What a 2A state girls basketball tournament for Sequim’s Hannah Bates.

First, Bates had a great game last Wednesday against Sammamish in a 57-37 win. Bates, a point guard who runs the Wolves’ offense, really filled up the scorebook with 14 points, including 12 in the second half. She added seven rebounds, four assists and best of all, six steals, to send the Wolves into the state quarterfinals.

In Saturday’s fourth-place game against Othello, Bates only had eight points, but she scored the winning basket with five seconds left to cap off a remarkable 34-32 comeback victory. Sequim finished the game on a 9-0 run over the final two minutes to win that game for the Wolves’ highest finish ever at state.

It was Bates’ final game for the Wolves, though she still has softball this spring. She will be moving on to play basketball for Peninsula College next year.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s Sporting Goods of Port Angeles.
