Isaiah Shamp has been a big part of the Port Angeles Roughriders’ success inside this season in his first year as a full-time varsity starter.
The 6-foot-5 forward bounced back from a rough game against North Kitsap to dominate against Kingston on Thursday, scoring 23 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Shamp uses a series of clever inside moves to get his points. Coach Kasey Ulin has compared him to a smaller version of Gonzaga’s Drew Timme with his ability to use his footwork to create shooting space inside.
It was the fifth game this season Shamp has scored at least 20 points. He had 20 against Toppenish on Dec. 30, 23 against Bainbridge on Dec. 15 and 21 against East Jefferson on Dec. 1. His season-high was 28 points against Foster on Dec. 3.
Shamp and the Riders return to action tonight with a home game against Olympic Peninsula rival Sequim.
Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
