ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Port Angeles’ Gary Johnson represents Roughriders

PORT ANGELES — What a week for the Port Angeles Roughriders boys basketball team (3-0, 5-1).

Port Angeles withstood a 28-0 run by No. 1 North Kitsap, rallying from a 20-point halftime deficit to knock off the Vikings 65-64. Senior guard Gary Johnson was the spark the Riders needed down the stretch, locking down North Kitsap’s high-scoring Kobe McMillian defensively, while scoring 14 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter. That included the game-winning free throws with seven seconds to play. Johnson also provided his high-level defense and on-court leadership in Port Angeles’ 71-39 and 63-62 wins over North Mason and Lakewood, respectively.

The Peninsula Daily News’ Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store.
