ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Sloan Tumaua, Forks wrestling

Forks’ Sloan Tumaua is the latest state champion for the Forks boys wrestling program.

The Forks wrestling team had its best showing at the Mat Classic since 2014, finishing a solid second place with seven boys placing.

Tumaua led the way for the Spartans, winning the state championship in the very tough 220-pound division. Tumaua, who also won Pacific League and regional championships, won two matches with pins at the state meet, then won his championship match with a tight 3-2 decision over Granger Sutton of Tonasket.

Tumaua, a junior who finished fourth at the Mat Classic last year, isn’t done yet. He came in fourth last year in the discus at the state track and field championships and is hoping to add a state championship in that event in the spring. He is also hoping to win another state wrestling championship next year.

Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
