ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Jennyfer Gomez, Sequim girls soccer, and Landyn Jones, Port Angeles football

Jenny Gomez had a fantastic week for the Sequim girls soccer team.

Gomez, a midfielder, scored two spectacular and perfectly placed long-distance goals in a 3-0 win over Port Angeles on Oct. 10. On her second goal, she hooked her shot in from 25 yards out and banked the ball in to the net off the far post.

She followed that up by heading in a game-winner on a corner kick with only 30 seconds left in the second overtime in a 1-0 win over Olympic. The Sequim girls are one of the top teams in the state at 9-1 and Gomez is a big reason why.

Our other athlete of the week is Port Angeles football player Landyn Jones, who had the best game of his career in a huge 48-14 Roughriders’ win over Bainbridge. Jones carried the ball 10 times for 114 yards and three touchdowns and caught two passes for 50 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown catch. Jones had runs of 19, 25 and 31 yards on the day for the 4-3 Riders, who are gunning for a winning record and a playoff spot.

Athletes of the Week is sponsored by Swain’s General Store in Port Angeles.
