ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Makyah Chambers, Neah Bay football, and Ava Shinkle, Sequim swimming

It was a fantastic weekend for Neah Bay’s Makyah Chambers and Sequim’s Ava Shinkle.

Chambers, who took over the quarterback position midseason for the Red Devils.

In a 70-14 win over Wahkiakum in the Red Devils’ state 1B playoff opener, Chambers passed 6-for-9 for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

However, his spectacular stats came on defense with two interception returns for touchdowns, one for 44 yards and the other for 80 yards.

Chambers and his teammates move on to the state quarterfinals to take on Almira-Coulee-Hartline in Moses Lake.

At the state 2A swim and dive championships, Shinkle had a huge weekend. First, she finished seventh in the 200-yard individual medley, then followed that up with an 11th-place finish in the 100 butterfly, single-handedly earning 18 out of Sequim’s 26 team points.

Shinkle helped the team earn another six points, swimming a 58.31-second opening leg of the 400 team relay to help Sequim finish 14th.
