ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Natalie Johnson, Port Angeles wrestling; Alex Schmadeke, Sequim gymnastics

This week, we pick a pair of athletes from girls’ wrestling and gymnastics as our Athletes of the Week.

Going up against girls from all classifications, Port Angeles’ Natalie Johnson placed eighth at the Mat Classic state wrestling championship last weekend in her 100-pound weight division.

If that wasn’t enough, she did one better the following day. Johnson won the state championship in her 106-pound weight division at the Washington Wrestling Association’s folkstyle wrestling tournament.

This weekend, Alex Schmadeke of Sequim placed fifth in the floor exercise at the state 2A/3A gymnastics championships. She also placed 10th overall in the state with a personal best score of 35.5. Schmadeke will be competing in gymnastics and tumbling next year for Augustana University in South Dakota.

Athletes of the Week are sponsored by Swains General Store in Port Angeles.
