ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: Port Townsend’s Jaz Apker-Montoya and Clallam Bay’s Ryan McCoy

It appeared that Jaz Apker-Montoya’s season for the Port Townsend girls basketball team could have ended last month when she sustained a concussion.

She missed several games, but returned to action last week, responding with games of 17 points against Klahowya (including two crucial free throws in overtime) and 16 points against Chimacum.

She hit four 3-pointers in that Chimacum game.

She’s a big part of the Redhawks’ three-game winning streak to finish league play, which vaulted Port Townsend to an Olympic League 1A Division championship.

Until now, we have yet to feature an athlete twice in one school year, but Clallam Bay’s Ryan McCoy had a basketball game against Crescent on Friday that was simply too amazing to ignore.

McCoy, also an athlete of the week in football, scored 42 of his team’s 46 points in a 46-35 win over Crescent.

Amazingly, McCoy did it without making a single 3-pointer. He made 19 field goals and four free throws in his epic 42-point effort.

Athlete of the Week is brought to you by the sports department at the Peninsula Daily News along with the sponsorship of Swain’s General Store serving Clallam and Jefferson counties since 1957.
