SEQUIM — North Mason’s attempt at a two-out rally was halted in the top of the seventh and Sequim hung on to win its fifth straight Olympic League baseball game and sixth overall contest at home Wednesday.
“This was a great gut-check for the guys,” Wolves coach Dave Ditlefsen said. “North Mason has some talented players and put a lot of pressure on us.
“I am pleased with how the team has rallied around each other and stayed the course after a rough start to the league season. We’ve made a few tweaks to our defensive alignment that seems to have helped shore up some of the defensive issue we were having early on.”
Sequim was buoyed by starting pitcher Ethan Staples, who went six innings on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
He gave way in the top of the seventh to Brayden White who had a bit of a bumpy ride, allowing a one-out double and a two-out RBI single to trim the Wolves’ lead to 4-3.
After an intentional walk, White recorded the final out with a strikeout on a 3-2 count.
Sequim took a 3-2 lead after three innings when Ayden Holland singled to left field and scored onWhite’s RBI double to center field.
Staples aided his own cause in the bottom of the sixth, leading off with a single, moving to second base on Devyn Dearinger’s single and third on a wild pitch before Bryant LaBoy’s sacrifice fly to right field.
Staples also scored Sequim’s first run, reaching on a leadoff single to center in the bottom of the second and later coming home on a two-out Logan Doyle RBI single.
Zeke Schmadeke’s RBI double brought home Doyle and tied the game up at 2-all.
The Wolves (6-6, 10-7) are scheduled to visit Olympic today.
