Wilder's Tanner Gochnour scores in a cloud of dust at home plate

BASEBALL: Wilder blasts North Kitsap 12-2

PORT ANGELES — The game was supposed to last nine innings but Wilder Baseball only needed seven innings to build up a 10-run advantage and rout North Kitsap 12-2 at Civic Field.

The Wilder senior team scored most of its runs in the bottom of the fourth, bringing eight runs across to open up a 9-0 lead.

Tanner Gochnour drove in two of those runs with a bases-loaded double that scored Travis Paynter and Evan Hurn.

The North Kitsap Legion senior team plated two runs of its own in the fifth to provide a cushion from the mercy rule, but Wilder added one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to end the game early.

With the win, Wilder improves to 9-2 on the season. The area team next plays Saturday and Sunday at the Global Sports Authority Tournament in Silverdale.

Wilder rapped 10 hits in Sunday’s win. Zach Withrow had two of those hits and drove in one run while scoring two.

Hurn had one hit, one run and two RBIs and Paynter singled, scored and batted in a run.

Ryan Mudd had a hit, a run and an RBI, Jordan Shepherd drove in a run and Larsson Chapman had one hit, an RBI and scored twice.

Eathen Boyer, Dusty Bates and Curan Bradley added a hit and a run each.

Wilder used a cadre of pitchers in holding North Kitsap to two runs and two hits.

Ricky Crawford, Nick Johnston, Shepherd, Paynter, James Grubb, Tanner Rhodefer and Brady Konopaski each pitched one inning.

Grubb struck out two in his one inning. Rhodefer also fanned two, while allowing one hit, walking three and giving up a pair of runs.

Johnston and Shepherd each had a strikeout.

Wilder was playing without starting outfielder Brett Wright, who was in Yakima participating in the All-State Baseball Series.

Wright’s St. Helens team won the championship at Yakima County Stadium.

The Wilder senior team returns home for two days of doubleheaders at Civic Field on Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, before hosting the annual Firecracker Classic July 3-6.

The Wilder junior team hosts Olympic at Civic Field on Wednesday before hitting the road for the Ed McNamara Invitational in Moses Lake on Friday through Sunday.
