BASEBALL: Wilder Senior drops second game at state tournament

PORT ANGELES — Wilder Senior was plagued by poor pitching and uncharacteristic mistakes in the field and on the base paths in a 10-6 loss to Lakeside Recovery on Saturday at the Senior Babe Ruth state tournament at Civic Field.

Batting first, Wilder took an early lead after plating three during a two-out rally.

Tanner Gochnour smoked an RBI double down the third base line to score Brady Konopaski, who had earlier reached base on a walk.

Gochnour finished 3 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored.

Wilder starter Jordan Shepherd struggled to find the strike zone and was pulled early, having completed just 1 2/3 innings on the mound.

He allowed five of Lakeside’s six runs in a big second inning.

Wilder cut the gap to 6-4 on a Travis Paynter double to the 355 feet sign in left field in the top of the third and pulled within one, 6-5, after Tanner Rhodefer singled and later scored on an overthrow.

Pitching woes continued for Wilder in the fifth and sixth inning as reliever James Grubb allowed two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.

Wilder’s Larsson Chapman doubled with one out in the top of the seventh and later scored on an Eathen Boyer sacrifice fly to right field, but Wilder could come no closer.

Wilder Senior will likely need to knock off both Wilder Junior at 11:30 a.m. and Columbia Basin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday to reach the Senior Babe Ruth World Series, or if they place second, the Senior Babe Ruth regional tournament.
