PORT ANGELES — Wilder Baseball opened the 2016 season with a doubleheader sweep of Renegades at Civic Field.
Travis Paynter and Curan Bradley combined to shut out Renegades 4-0 in Monday’s first game, and Wilder rallied from a three runs down win the second game 5-3.
“Overall, I thought we played very well,” third-year Wilder coach Mike Politika said.
“We had a few mental lapses at times, but I think overall we played solid defense.
“We’re all trying to get to know each other and just trying to feel out the new club.”
Paynter struck out four and held Kitsap County-based Renegades to four hits in five innings and Bradley pitched two hitless and scoreless innings in the opener.
Wilder’s bats provided Paynter with early support, plating three runs in the second inning.
Janson Pederson singled home Eathen Boyer for Wilder’s first run of the season.
Anders Chapman’s bases-loaded walk scored Evan Hurn to make it 2-0, and James Grubb scored the third run when he tagged up on Corey Stone’s flyout to right field.
In the fourth inning, Matt Hendry scored on Boyer’s double, giving Wilder a 4-0 lead.
Wilder was held scoreless for its next seven innings at-bat, stretching into Monday’s second game.
Grubb took over for Pederson in the fifth inning and in his first frame on the mound he walked five and allowed a single. Renegades took all that and turned it into three runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Wilder ended its scoring drought.
Hurn doubled home Boyer, and later Hurn scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Wilder scored the go-ahead run in the sixth when Hendry and Tanner Gochnour scored on an error. Boyer later scored the final run.
“Eathen Boyer had a good weekend,” Politika said.
“He drove in some runs, got a couple hits in the first game, contributed to our rally in the second game.”
After a rough initial inning, Grubb shut down Renegades the remainder of the game.
“He had that one inning that he struggled in,” Politika said.
“Fortunately, we cam back and scored some runs, and he shut the door in the sixth and seventh.”
Grubb struck out six and allowed on hit in his three innings.
Pederson allowed one hit and walked only two in his four innings.
Wilder (2-0), the North Olympic Peninsula’s independent Senior Babe Ruth squad, next plays a pair of consecutive doubleheaders against Blaze Baseball 18U: Saturday at Civic Field, and Sunday at North Mason High School in Belfair. First pitch both days is noon.
