OLYMPIA — As expected, the Olympic League champion Sequim girls basketball team will get to host a District 2/3 playoff game Tuesday, while the Port Angeles girls, Port Angeles boys and Sequim boys will all go on the road for their first-round games.
It will be a battle of Wolves in Sequim at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The Wolves, who went 14-0 in league and 18-1 on the season and are ranked No. 2 in RPI in the state, were given the No. 1 seed in the District 2/3 tournament. They will host the Clover Park Timberwolves at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Clover Park went 9-5 (9-8 overall) and finished third in the 2A South Puget Sound League.
Sequim has been missing leading scorer Jolene Vaara the past week with an ankle injury. Without her, the Wolves lost their first game all year last week to Neah Bay, which is ranked No. 1 among 1B schools. The team is hoping she can return for the postseason.
Sequim will move on to a second-round game Thursday whether the Wolves win or lose. It’s possible the Wolves could host another game, but that’s only if they go into the consolation bracket. Win and the Wolves move on to the district semifinals at Highline High School, against the winner of Sammamish and Enumclaw. Lose, the Wolves host a game against the winner of Lindbergh and Steilacoom.
The Port Angeles girls (11-3, 11-9), who finished second in the Olympic League to Sequim, got a No. 6 seed and will play No. 3 seed Renton, which went 11-1 (15-4) and is co-champion of the KingCo 2A league. This game will also be at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The bad news is the Roughriders have to go on the road to play a league champion and a higher seed but the good news is they will move on to the second round win or lose. It is possible the Riders could host a playoff game Thursday if they go into the consolation bracket. If they win Tuesday, the Riders move on to play the winner of North Kitsap and White River at Highline High School. Lose, they play the winner of Orting and North Mason at home.
Boys bracket
The Port Angeles boys, who like the girls, were second in the Olympic 2A League with an 11-3 record (13-8 overall), and they also picked up a No. 6 seed. They will play at No. 3 seed Enumclaw (15-1, 18-2), which is the champion of the 2A SPSL. That game is at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Win that game and the Riders would move on Friday to play the winner of North Kitsap and Clover Park. That game would be at Highline High School. If they lose the first-round game, the Riders would host a game Friday against the winner of Highline/ Franklin Pierce.
The Sequim boys get to host a playoff game. The Wolves (8-6, 10-10), who finished third in the Olympic 2A League, got a No. 10 seed and host No. 15 Lindbergh (4-7, 6-13) at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Lindbergh finished fourth in the KingCo League.
However, being a relatively low seed, the Wolves must win that game to move on. A loss ends the Sequim season. If Sequim wins, the Wolves move on to play the loser of Clover Park/North Kitsap on Friday on the road.
Forks girls and 1B
The Forks girls are in the third round of the District 4 2B tournament, having lost a close game to Rainier and won by 20 points over Morton-White Pass in the first two rounds. The Spartans (16-6 overall) play Wahkiakum at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Castle Rock High School. Forks has to win Tuesday, then win another game Thursday to qualify for state.
All four Neah Bay and Crescent teams remain alive in the Tri-District tournament. The Neah Bay girls, ranked No. 1 among 1B schools and seeded No. 1 in the tournament, got a first-round bye and host No. 9 seed Crescent at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Crescent won its first-round game 43-34 over Sound Christian Academy on Saturday.
The Neah Bay boys, seeded No. 3 in the tournament, host No. 6 seed Orcas Island at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Crescent boys, who went to overtime to beat Evergreen Lutheran 50-48 on Saturday, travel to Lummi to play the Blackhawks at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
