FORKS — Forks withstood a 34-point performance by Tenino’s Logan Brewer as the Spartans won their Evergreen League opener 63-48 over the Beavers on Tuesday.
“Tenino played hard, Logan Brewer came after us and it was good for us to get a win back at home,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.
Brewer had three 3-point baskets in the second quarter as Tenino went on an 8-0 run to close the half and trail 31-29 at the break.
“We switched it up and went man-to-man defensively and put Tony [Flores] on Brewer and he did a really good job,” Gooding said. “We went to a 1-3-1 as well to give them some different looks.”
Gooding said some scrappy play by Oscar Gonzalez helped ignite the Spartans.
“A hustle play where Oscar got on the floor for the ball and gave us a spark that got the fire started,” he said. “That changed our mentality, got us involved, got the crowed involved.”
Trey Baysinger led the way for Forks with 16 points. Flores added 14 and Carter Windle chipped in with 10.
“Carter played really well and made some big baskets for us,” Gooding said. “It was nice to see some guys shooting the ball confidently and making some shots.”
Forks also hit 10 of 14 shots from the free-throw line.
The Spartans (1-0, 9-3) visit Neah Bay (1-7) tonight.

CHIMACUM — Loggers coach Chris Ferrier said a team effort was the main component in Tuesday’s win over the Cowboys.
“We got back to basics in practice and it showed in our game vs Chimacum,” Ferrier said. “The guys bought into doing things the right way again. We got away from being a group of individuals trying to ‘win’ on their own and bought into the ‘we.’ It was really refreshing to have that sort of effort out of the guys.”
Ferrier pointed to the third quarter, when the Loggers were able to stretch their lead to 20 entering the final frame, as crucial.
“The third quarter was really the turning point in the game,” Ferrier said. “We’ve had a habit of coming out a little bit flat in the third quarter, but we really came out energized and defensively minded in the third quarter and kind of put the game away.”
Brendan Bergstrom had the hot hand with 27 points for Crescent.
“Brendan was outstanding offensively once he got a little bit of rhythm going he started really knocking out some shots,” Ferrier said.
Ferrier said Hayden Ferrell was really instrumental in the win, despite not scoring a point.
“He really had his fingerprints all over this with defense and deflections and ball movement,” Ferrier said.
Ferrier also had praise for Mason Owens and Gabe Ritchie.
“Mason was really aggressive offensively getting to the rim and moving the ball around,” Ferrier said. “Gabe Richey was really solid defensively and rebounding. I think he easily had double-digit rebounds.”

POULSBO — It wasn’t a Grand Canyon-sized gulch, but the Wolves dug too deep a hole to dig out of against the Vikings, rated No. 3 in the state’s RPI.
Sequim trailed 21-12 after the opening quarter against North Kitsap. The Wolves kept pace against North Kitsap in the second and third periods, but couldn’t close the gap.
“We got down early and could not recover,” Wolves coach Greg Glasser said. “I credit our boys with battling back, but if we want to compete against the best teams in our league we have to be able to defend and rebound better.”
Erik Christiansen led Sequim with 16 points. He added five rebounds and three steals.
