BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Forks rallies past Neah Bay; Port Townsend wins on late 3-point shot

FORKS — Forks rallied from a first-half deficit and held back Neah Bay 67-64 in a nonleague contest Wednesday at Spartans Gym.

The Red Devils were up 39-32 at halftime, buoyed by a 23-point first quarter in which Cameron Moore scored all 12 of his points.

But Forks came out of the locker room and took the lead behind seven points from post Braton Armas.

Armas finished with 21 points.

“It was good, obviously that third quarter coming out of halftime getting it sparked and getting going was big for us,” Spartans coach Rick Gooding said.

“Braton had a good game, everybody that got in there played a good game.”

Armas hit on 8 of 17 shots from the floor in the win.

Seth Johnson played well at point guard and added 12 points for Forks and Cort Prose and Brandon Baar had 11 points apiece for the Spartans (1-1).

“It was a fast-paced game,” Gooding said. “We had to move guys around and we played a little bit smaller.”

[Neah Bay] can shoot the ball, they can move, they are a tough team and they will be a really tough team when they get into basketball shape.”

Jay Brunk led the Red Devils (1-1) with 23 points, four steals and three assists.

Sean Bitegeko was active with 10 points and 17 rebounds and Keith Johnson Jr. scored 11 points and added four assists and two steals.

Forks hosts Port Townsend tonight, while Neah Bay hosts Darrington this evening.

PORT TOWNSEND — Noa Montoya hit the eventual game-winning 3-point basket for the Redhawks with 19 seconds to play and Port Townsend held on for a thrilling home win Wednesday.

“Their freshman Thunder Doherty hits a 3 with 30 seconds to take the lead,” Port Townsend coach Tom Webster said.

“We work it around, and I’m just about getting ready to call a time out when Noa flashes to the top of the key and drains one with 19 seconds left.”

“The gym went crazy when he hit that 3-ball.

Montoya finished with 26 points, his third straight 24-plus point outing.

“He’s been pretty economical with his shot selection,” Webster said. “It’s not like he’s putting up a ton of shots.”

Jaden Watkins added 15 points and Nico Winegar had nine despite being hampered by foul trouble.

“They were good,” Webster said of Crosspoint. “I knew they arer traditionally a playoff team in their league, so this was a real exciting game.”

JOYCE — Eric Emery poured in 25 points, but the Loggers were taken down by the Owls at home Wednesday.

“The Owls played a quick tempo game and got us out of sorts,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said.

“We really competed very hard, the guys really battled, but we had some mental mistakes in the middle two quarters where we didn’t close out on shooters and gave them nine points on wide open threes.

“Pair that with the six layups we missed in the first quarter and the complexion of the game was a little different than it could have been. As it was, we hung with them and they just slowly pulled away.”

Emery had a good night from 3-point range.

“Eric was pretty solid,” Ferrier said. “He hit five threes and shot it like he’s capable. We hit eight as a team, and usually we shoot more than the other teams we play, but they hit nine threes and it kind of canceled out our perimeter advantage.

“There’s no quit in these guys though. We maybe a bit on the young side but the progress is tangible already from game one to game two. If we keep progressing in the same manner we are going to be OK.”

Crescent (1-1) visits Oakville on Saturday.
