BOYS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Sequim, Port Angeles, Port Townsend all record shutout wins

SEQUIM — Ryan Tolberd netted a hat trick as Sequim continued their strong run of play with a shutout victory over North Kitsap at home Wednesday.

Tolberd was the Wolves’ Man of the Match, according to coach Dave Brasher.

Tolberd opened the scoring in the eighth minute and also notched goals in the 12th and 52nd minutes.

“Ryan Tolberd had a great game,” Brasher said. “He scored in the eighth minute on a cross in from Mathys. [Tolberd] headed it really strongly, the goalkeeper might have made a save and he poked it right in. A bang-bang finish.”

Tolberd’s second goal was assisted by Adrian Funston.

“Adrian Funston slotted through a nice pass on to the right side and Ryan shot low and hard to the far [left] post,” Brasher said.

Tanche scored just before halftime after a long throw-in by Chris Morgan.

Tolberd added to his total in the 52nd when he was fouled in the box and converted his penalty kick with a strike to the upper-right corner for his sixth goal of the season.

Tanche scored his second of the game and seventh on the season in the 58th minute when his long free kick hit the middle of the crossbar and bounced straight down and over the goal line.

Eli Gish headed in Sequim’s final tally in the 70th minute off a corner kick sent in by freshman Angel Servin.

Navy Thomas-Brenske made three saves to pick up the shutout in goal.

“Three saves, one a real nice one in the first half when a North Kitsap kid broke loose and Navy deflected it and looked like NK player was going to run on to it and kick it in and Navy covered it up,” Brasher said.

Brasher said Funston and Michael McAleer played well and freshman forward Kristian Mingoy also is “playing better and better.”

Port Angeles 3, North Mason 0

BELFAIR — Stuart Methner scored twice and Anton Kathol picked up his second straight shutout in goal as the Roughriders earned three key league points in a road win over the Bulldogs.

“Methner opened the scoring on a nicely weighted pass from Andrew St. George,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said. “Stuart passed the ball past the outrushing North Mason goalkeeper to put the Riders up in the 13th minute.”

Port Angeles went into halftime up 1-0, but scored quickly in the second half.

“After a scramble in the North Mason penalty box, Gabe Long collected a short pass from Austin Fischer and hit a well-struck left-footed volley to the far post to make it 2-0 in the 45th minute,” Saari said.

[We] added an insurance goal in the 50th minute on a classic [Andrew] Methner to [Stuart] Methner combination play. Stuart volleyed a pass wide to Andrew on the wing who took the ball down to the endline beating several players and cut it back across the goal back to his brother Stuart. Stuart hit a first time passing shot that went off the inside of the far post and in. It was pretty soccer and a familiar connection between brothers.”

Stuart Methner said his team improved as the game wore on.

“We were off to a pretty slow start in the first half, but we picked it up in the seconnd half with our passing game,” he said. “We figured out how to deal with their high ball attack and play out of the back. Our goals were good team goals with good passing build up and movement off the ball.”

Stuart Methner was Saari’s choice as the team’s offensive player of the match, Long and Andrew Methner were praised for their play in transition and Kathol was the defensive player of the game.

“Anton again played solid, aggresively controlling balls that came into his box in the air and on the ground,” Saari said. “Once the ball was in his hands he kick started the offense with 3/4 field punts.”

Freshman Hayden Desser saw his first varsity action late in the game and backup goalie Josh Boe saw some time as a field player late in the game also.

Saari said second-place Port Angeles (2-1-0, 3-1-0) is a little banged up and missing a few starters going into a key league match Saturday against North Kitsap (2-1-0, 2-2-1) at 1 p.m. at Peninsula College.

Port Townsend 4, Bellevue Christian 0

PORT TOWNSEND — The Redhawks picked up their first win of the season and first for new head coach Robert Cantley with a shutout win over the Vikings.

“We dominated the first part of the first half and later on they got more control against us, but [Bellevue Christian] never truly threatened our goal,” Cantley said.

“We didn’t give them a lot of chances in open play. We were doing pretty well controlling midfield for the most part.”

“In the second half we came out much, much stronger than them.”

Silas DeWyse scored twice, putting Port Townsend up 1-0 with a goal 15 minutes into the game and adding an insurance tally in the 60th minute for the Redhawks.

“The two goals scored by Silas came off of flowing, multi-pass offense,” Cantley said.

“We want to move the ball up the field quickly because high school soccer is such a fast-paced game other teams don’t let you dwell on the ball. So it’s nice to see us successfully apply something we have been working on in practice in a game.”

Eli Lupton had Port Townsend’s second goal on a penalty kick in the 50th minute.

Ben Mattern added the final goal late in the game.

Nico Winegar picked up the shutout in goal for Port Townsend (1-2-0).

“Nico had a couple of saves that he had to make but nothing threatening, nothing that had us worried. They threatened us with free kicks and corners. But he worked well to communicate with the defense and I was really pleased with how they played. [Bellevue Christian] had a lot of fast, strong guys on their roster.”

The Redhawks visit Chimacum on Tuesday.
