BOYS SOCCER: Sequim’s season ends with 3-1 district loss to Sumner

POULSBO — Sequim’s soccer season came to a close Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Sumner in the West Central District tournament at North Kitsap High School.

Sequim’s Nick Baird connected with Thomas Winfield to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

“Winfield kicked it from the right side of just about the 18-yard box to the far post across the middle of the goal,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said.

The lead held up until seven minutes into the second half when Sumner equalized.

After tying the score, the Spartans were boosted emotionally and began to take charge of play, according to Brasher.

“We kind of dominated the first half ,then they started controlling the play after they scored the first goal,” Brasher said.

“We battled them pretty tough.”

Sumner took the lead in the 77th minute.

“They had a long throw into the box and we attempted to clear it but it clipped off the top of one our players heads and it fell right to them for an open goal,” Brasher said.

Desperate for the tie, the Wolves forced a corner kick and brought everyone on the field up to try for the tying goal.

“They stopped it and they got what amounted to an empty-netter,” Brasher said.

“Our nine seniors, six of them are starters, were pretty disappointed.

“But we finished 14-5, had some big wins over North Kitsap and it was one of the best seasons we have had in years.”
