It’s April 1, but this is no foolin’ — for years Seattle Mariners fans have watched most games on Fox Sports Network Northwest, or FSN Northwest.
It’s still in the same channel position on your cable or satellite dish, but the channel has a new name — Root Sports — starting today.
The rebranding coincides with the first Mariners regular-season game of the year tonight in Oakland.
But other than the name, which the company says is being changed to reflect the networks’ “new approach,” fans might not notice much else all that different.
In a news release, the company said Root Sports will be available on the same channels and on all the same cable, satellite and television service providers that carried FSN Northwest.
FSN Pittsburgh and FSN Rocky Mountain, also regional sports networks, are also changing their names to Root Sports on Friday.
While the stations were once owned by News Corp., which owns Fox, they no longer are. They’re now under the control of DIRECTV Sports Networks.
Gametime is 7:05 p.m. Pregame coverage from Oakland starts at 6 p.m.
