PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College women’s basketball team got a huge 34-point game from Millie Long to blow out Shoreline 79-64 in a battle for first place in the North Region.

The game was not as close as the final score indicated. The Pirates went into the fourth quarter up 66-41.

With the victory, the women pull into a first-place tie with Shoreline and Skagit Valley at 7-2. The Pirates have won seven straight after losing their first two North Region games of the year to claw back into first place.

Long shot 5-for-5 in the first quarter and had 13 points in the opening stanza. She ended up shooting 12-for-15 from the field for the game and 9-for-13 from the free-throw line to collect her 34 points. She added seven rebounds and four assists, both tops for the team. On top of all that, she was the only player on the team to play the full 40 minutes.

Jenilee Donovan had 12 points and Chasity Selden came off the bench to score 11. Adam Kaganak also had nine points and Ituau Tuisaula eight.

Men’s game

The Peninsula College men lost their first North Region game of the year 57-56 on a last-second bucket by Shoreline.

Despite the loss, the men are still alone in first place in the North with an 8-1 record.

It was a close, hard-fought game that came down to the final seconds. With the Pirates leading 54-53, Shoreline took the lead with 40 seconds left on a 15-foot jumper by Jalyn Stepney.

On the following possession, Shoreline tipped a Peninsula pass. Roosevelt Williams Jr. picked up the loose ball in the front court and was fouled going to the rim with 22 seconds left. He made both of his free throws to give Peninsula a 56-55 lead.

Shoreline had one last chance. The Pirates defended well on the final shot, forcing an air ball, but the Dolphins were able to tip in an offensive rebound with 0.7 seconds left to give them the 57-56 win.

The loss snapped a 14-game winning streak for the Pirates. The last time they lost was in early December on the road to Centralia.

Ese Onakpoma led the Pirates with 15 points, while Malik Jackson hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 to go along with eight rebounds. Williams finished with 11 points, six assists and three steals.

The men and women’s teams are on the road for the next week. The women (7-2, 15-4) play at Skagit Valley (7-2, 14-9) at 5 p.m. Wednesday in another battle for first place, while the men (8-1, 21-2) play at Skagit (3-6, 15-9) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
