COLLEGE HOOPS ROUNDUP: Peninsula men bounce back to win a pair

Pirates beat Pierce on a buzzer-beater

EDMONDS — After a tournament-opening loss to South Puget Sound, the Peninsula College men’s team bounced back with some hot shooting and a pair of victories at the Triton Classic held this weekend at Edmonds College.

The men beat Blue Mountain 89-70 on Sunday, shooting 54.8 percent from the floor (34-for-62) and beat Pierce 84-81 on Saturday on a 3-point shot by Beni Njomo at the final buzzer. The Pirates shot even better in this game at 60.4 percent (32-for-53).

The Pirates also lost Friday 73-65 to South Puget Sound. It was the second time this year the men had a fairly close loss to the Clippers. After the weekend action, the men sit at 5-5 for the season.

Ese Onakpoma had a huge weekend. In Sunday’s victory, Onakpoma scored 29 points on 12-for-20 shooting. He also had 12 rebounds. Javon Ervin scored 21 points, adding seven assists and four steals. Aiden Olmstead and Antonio Odum each scored 10 points, while Njomo had nine points.

In Saturday’s game against Pierce, the Raiders actually rallied from a 58-39 halftime deficit early in the second half to tie the game several times late. A Pierce layup tied it at 81-81 with 13 seconds left before Njomo’s shot prevented overtime. Njomo finished with three 3-pointers and 16 points.

Onakpoma again led the team with 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting. He added six rebounds and five assists. Ervin again had 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting with seven rebounds. Port Angeles’ Wyatt Dunning shot 3-for-5 from beyond the arc for nine points.

In Friday’s loss to South Puget Sound, Ervin led the team with 20 while Onakpoma scored 19. Olmstead had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Over the weekend, Onakpoma averaged 24.7 points a game while Ervin averaged 20.7.

Peninsula is at home for three games beginning Thursday as the NWAC crossover tournament originally set for Green River College was moved to Port Angeles. The Pirates next play Umpqua (7-3) at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Treasure Valley 52, Peninsula 45

BELLEVUE — The Peninsula College women got off to a slow start and struggled with their outside shooting in a 52-45 loss against Treasure Valley on Sunday at Bellevue College.

The Pirates beat Treasure Valley 65-45 last week in the Pirate Classic. Sunday’s game snapped a four-game winning streak for Peninsula.

Peninsula only scored four points in the first quarter and shot 0-for-13 from behind the 3-point arc.

Ciera Tugade Agasiva and Alex Mackey each scored 12 to lead the team. Agasiva also had 12 rebounds, while Mackey had seven boards and three steals.

Peninsula (5-2) plays Blue Mountain (3-5) on Thursday in Pendleton, Ore., in an NWAC crossover tournament.
