COLLEGE HOOPS ROUNDUP: Peninsula men bounce back to win a pair

Pirates beat Pierce on a buzzer-beater

EDMONDS — After a tournament-opening loss to South Puget Sound, the Peninsula College men’s team bounced back with some hot shooting and a pair of victories at the Triton Classic held this weekend at Edmonds College.

The men beat Blue Mountain 89-70 on Sunday, shooting 54.8 percent from the floor (34-for-62) and beat Pierce 84-81 on Saturday on a 3-point shot by Beni Njomo at the final buzzer. The Pirates shot even better in this game at 60.4 percent (32-for-53).

The Pirates also lost Friday 73-65 to South Puget Sound. It was the second time this year the men had a fairly close loss to the Clippers. After the weekend action, the men sit at 5-5 for the season.

Ese Onakpoma had a huge weekend. In Sunday’s victory, Onakpoma scored 29 points on 12-for-20 shooting. He also had 12 rebounds. Javon Ervin scored 21 points, adding seven assists and four steals. Aiden Olmstead and Antonio Odum each scored 10 points, while Njomo had nine points.

In Saturday’s game against Pierce, the Raiders actually rallied from a 58-39 halftime deficit early in the second half to tie the game several times late. A Pierce layup tied it at 81-81 with 13 seconds left before Njomo’s shot prevented overtime. Njomo finished with three 3-pointers and 16 points.

Onakpoma again led the team with 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting. He added six rebounds and five assists. Ervin again had 21 points on 9-for-14 shooting with seven rebounds. Port Angeles’ Wyatt Dunning shot 3-for-5 from beyond the arc for nine points.

In Friday’s loss to South Puget Sound, Ervin led the team with 20 while Onakpoma scored 19. Olmstead had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Over the weekend, Onakpoma averaged 24.7 points a game while Ervin averaged 20.7.
