COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula men triumph over Pierce

Pirate men beat Pierce on the road

PUYALLUP — The Peninsula College men’s soccer team got four goals from their “Big Three” of Joey Hollimon, Juan Carrillo-Perez and Cesar Gervacio, beating Pierce College on the road 4-2.

Peninsula got a flurry of three goals in 12 minutes in the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Carrillo-Perez scored in the 32nd minute assisted by Hollimon. Hollimon scored on a penalty kick in the 39th minute, then Gervacio scored in the 44th minute.

Pierce made the Pirates sweat in the second half, scoring two quick goals in the 65th and 67th minutes to make it 3-2. But, Hollimon put the game away with a goal in the 80th minute, his second of the game. Gervacio assisted on that score.

“In the first half, we showed our potential. We moved the ball well, we played intelligently,” said coach Jake Hughes. “Our defense kept a tight ship. They showed glimpses of their true potential.”

Hollimon, Gervacio and Carrillo-Perez combined for 31 goals and 13 assists for the Pirates last year and are already off to a fast start this season with seven goals and two assists combined in three games.

The Pirates (2-1) next play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Shoreline in the NWAC North Division opener.

The Peninsula women also were scheduled to face Pierce but the Raiders canceled the contest due to a lack of healthy players stemming from early season injuries. The Pirates (3-0) visit Shoreline at noon Saturday.
