SHORELINE — The Peninsula College men’s and women’s soccer teams opened NWAC North Region play with victories against the Shoreline Dolphins.
The Pirate men rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit with three second-half goals in a 4-3 triumph, while the Peninsula women earned a 1-0 shutout in Saturday’s contests.
Jazmin Ramos scored in the 56th minute for the Pirate women.
“The midfielder from Thousand Oaks, Calif. pounced on a loose ball at the top of the 18 [yard-marker] and drove a shot to the back post,” women’s head coach Kanyon Anderson said.
“It was nice for Jazmin to get the goal. She has been playing great in the midfield for us all season and it is fitting that she would get the game winner.”
It was just the second goal Shoreline, which advanced to the NWAC semifinals last season along with Peninsula, have conceded on the season, and the Dolphins’ first loss.
“[We] controlled the majority of the game and were kept out of the back on the net by some good goalkeeping and a few missed chances,” Anderson said.
“Shoreline is always a tough place to play. They are a hard-nosed team with good goalkeeping and a commitment to defending.”
Men concede early goals
The Pirate men allowed two early goals to fall behind 2-0 in the first 12 minutes.
Peninsula (1-0-0, 3-0-1) pulled one back when Juan Carillo found the net in the 28th minute.
The Pirates tied and then overtook the Dolphins when Salvador Vargas scored goals in the 55th and 69th minutes.
Shoreline tied it up in the 77th minute, but Cesar Gervacio scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of play for a thrilling finish
Peninsula men and women (1-0-0, 2-1-1) play at Everett on Wednesday.
